Research
The Whiddon College of Medicine and USA Health are committed to innovative biomedical research, with the goal of enriching the lives of those in the Gulf Coast region and beyond. Research centers and institutes in the college include the Mitchell Cancer Institute, Center for Healthy Communities, Center of Excellence for Health Disparities Research, Center for Lung Biology, Center for Strategic Health Innovation, and Center for Disaster Healthcare Preparedness. Clinical trials in USA Health are overseen by the Clinical Trials Office. In addition, the College of Medicine and the Mitchell Cancer Institute has several cutting edge research core laboratories, including the Bioimaging Core Research Facility, the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource Laboratories, the Mass Spectrometry Core Facility, and the USA Health Biobank and Histology Core Facility. Other research resources include an AAALAC-accredited vivarium and the Laboratory for Infectious Disease (a BSL-3 facility). Additional resources are available through USA's partnership in the regional Center for Clinical and Translational Science network.
Currently, there are 371 faculty members across the 17 academic departments and the division of medical education in the College of Medicine. In addition, the College of Medicine provides training opportunities to 45 graduate students and 11 postdocs, as well as to residents, fellows and medical students. Current extramural funding to the College is over $24 million, with $8.3 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and support from NSF, HRSA, and DOD funding totaling $6.7 million.
